We’ve spent all summer telling you about amazing fares to Europe, but now the cheap flights are a bit closer to home. American Airlines is offering flights to Chicago, Tampa and other U.S. cities for travel through Dec. 16. Like most of the other fall sales we’ve seen, dates around Thanksgiving (Nov. 24, 25, 28, 29 and 30) are blacked out.

We searched for a quick Labor Day getaway between St. Louis and Milwaukee and found fares were only $10 higher than the advertised sale price. With taxes, a roundtrip flight totaled $108. Note: We selected travel dates Fri., Sept. 4 and Tues., Sept. 8.

When we ran a broader search, we found AirTran was offering the same route and the same price.Sample fares are one way and do not include taxes and fees:

Low-Fare Finder

British Airways (BA) has unveiled a handy tool for travellers on its website - the Low-Fare Finder. The easy-to-use chart lists BA's 150 destinations and allows users to see exactly when fares are lowest. It follows hard on the heels of the Value Calculator, launched in June, which compares the cost of BA flights with those of the major low-cost airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair.

The Low-Fare Finder covers flights to seven geographical regions from Europe, UK and Ireland to the Far East and Australia. On a domestic route, London Gatwick to Edinburgh for example, the listed price is £73 return. Travellers can either select "Find this price" to discover when this fare is available or the "Show all months" link to track the fare over 12 months. It's a steady £71 return every month, except for the remainder of this month, right through to July 2010.

Further afield, flights to Sydney are available this month from £777 return. This dips to £606 return in September and October, rises slightly to £621 between November and March and then rises to £793 in April, May and June. In July 2010, a return flight to Sydney will cost a pricey £1191.The fares are based on a seven-day return journey and are the lowest adult return prices including taxes, fees, charges and surcharges.

Odessa, Sofia, Budapest and Belgrade - Czech Airlines has discounted flights to these cities by 25 per cent this weekend.The Czech low-cost airline flies from Manchester and London Heathrow airports to several European cities.

This weekend's line-up is as follows:

Fly from Manchester to Odessa, the major seaport on the Black Sea coast of Ukraine, from £225 return or Sofia, capital of Bulgaria, from £159 return, including all taxes and fees. Travel between August 17 and October 24. Use promotional code JM211Q.

Flights from London to Budapest, capital of Hungary, cost from £95 return or Belgrade, Serbia, from £159 return with all taxes and charges. Travel between August 17 and November 15. The promotional code to snap up the discount on these fares is 8K6U8N.

Cheap flights

The Rockhampton Regional Council says cheap airfares have prompted an increase in visitor numbers at the Rockhampton Airport.Councillor Graeme Brady says more than 61,000 passengers used the airport in June - about 4,000 more than at the same time last year.He says visitor numbers have have been growing all year.

"Without a doubt, cheap airfares and more routes - we've got Melbourne, Townsville - there's more opportunities to fly and they are still reasonably priced," he said.

Monarch flight offers

he low-cost airline has increased its discount for online bookings and is now offering up to £40 off all return flights. With the discount, flights to Gran Canaria and Fuertevenura cost from £52 one-way including taxes.Flights to Malaga, Faro or Alicante cost from £30 one-way including taxes.

Monarch's regular discount is £5 off one-way flights and £10 off return flights. This offer applies to scheduled flights only. Charter flights are not covered.

The discount varies by date and route. Be as flexible as possible with your travel dates to secure the cheapest flights.

British airways Air fares

British Airways (BA) has increased its fares by up to £40 per return flight on long-haul routes.Economy-Class flyers and those in Premium Economy (BA's World Traveller and World Traveller Plus classes) will have to stump up an extra £20 per return flight.

Business-Class and First-Class travellers will be hit with an increase of £40 per round trip.The higher fees will apply to flights from the UK to the US, Canada and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, the Far East and Japan.
